The Dong, an industrious ethnic group with a long history and bravery, liveprimarily in the provinces of Hunan, Guizhou, the adjoining areas of Guangxi, Hunanand Guizhou, and the southwestern Hubei, and engage mainly in agriculture, as well asforestry. Huanggang Village, the field of the author’s research and an traditional Dongvillage with original ecosystem, is located in Shuangjiang Town, Liping County,Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture, Guizhou Province. In this village,by the skills and technologies accumulated after a long period of practice, Dong peoplehave created a magnificent three-dimensional fish pond system. Simultaneously, underthe traditional regulations in Dong community, it made the fish pond resources bereasonably allocated and utilized, so as to achieve the harmony between man andnature.At Huanggang Village, the ecological wisdom of artificial three-dimensional fishpond system, which is created by Dong people, is an important part in Dong’straditional culture and occupies an important place in the resource management in Dongarea. The research of this paper is based on the field surveys at Huanggang Village,studies the close relationship between Dong’s traditional culture and the resourcemanagement of Dong community, analyses the factors which made the resources ofHuanggang Dong fish ponds operate and manage orderly. Over there, traditionalregulations or laws have been embedded throughout Dong culture system and theoperational mechanism throughout the entire Dong society.This paper is divided into four parts. The first part is the introductory part, whichincludes this paper’s research interests, research summary, the explanation of relatedresearch theories and methods, and the significance and value of the research. Thesecond part, in the aim of understand the difficulties from the creation of artificialthree-dimensional fish pond system in Huanggang Dong society, describes the naturaland historical background of the place for field study. At the same time, this part carriesthe detailed narration on the relationship between “fish” and fish ponds in Dong social,and reveals the significant role of fish ponds in Dong society. The third part analyzesthe actual distribution and configuration of fish pond system, and the knowledge systemin the construction of fish pond system in Huanggang Dong community, which canprove the value and importance of indigenous ecological wisdom of Dong people’s inHuanggang. Meanwhile, from the understanding to functionalism, this part analyzes thefunctions of production, ecology, water storage, flood control, fire control, and wetlandprotection in fish pond system. The fourth part starting from the operation andmanagement of community resources, studies the harmonious operation of traditionalculture and community resources Dong community, which is about the guarantee function of traditional regulations and community honor naming system under thecultural system, to the safety of community resources.This paper, through the analysis of the creation and maintenance of Dong fish pondsystem, is to understand the relation between its culture and ecology, so as to promotethe culture of “fish” to achieve the harmonious relationship between man and nature andamong people. Hopefully, it can play an important role in social stability, to promote theuse of ecological wisdom and for the sake of the ecological protection of theharmonious relationship between man and nature. In short, in Huanggang, the effectiveoperation and management of Dong fish pond resources, can be as a reference for thecommunity resource managements in other ethnic group areas in China.
