At the closing ceremony of the12th session of the National People’s Congress, Chairman Xi Jinping point out that,"China Dream" needs the support of the Chinese spirit. The Chinese spirit is the national spirit with patriotism as the core content and reform and innovation as the core content of the times spirit, the national spirit can rejuvenate the soul of our human resources, the spirit of the times is the soul of national development, national rejuvenation, the rich of people. As the hope of the nation, the country’s future development successor, contemporary college students must have a strong sense of national spirit. Only the national spirits with patriotism at its core can tightly together China’s56ethnic groups, National spirit is essential to advance the building of Socialist culture with Chinese characteristics power, is to deepen the inner need of socialism core values education, is to build a well-off society in the spirit of strength, is the power inherent in the realization of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. At the same time, the economic system reform of our country is at a crucial stage. To break barriers of cure’benefits, stale ideology and the growing differentiation of social strata needs the contemporary youth University students. At the same time, in the context of contemporary globalization, Western hostile forces on the country’s "Westernization" and "Division" has never stopped, continue to deepen reform and opening up, to achieve "China dream", the cultivation of college students’ national spirit must also be strengthened.As a starting point to national spirit, this paper features three aspects of connotation, characteristics and function of national spirit. This article is based on the theoretical study of characteristics and functions of the national spirit, uses the theory of the abroad study on the national spirit for reference, combines with the position and role of national spirit in today’s society and the current situation of contemporary college students’ national spirit cultivation, focusing on the social and individual values of the cultivation of contemporary college students’ national spirit. To maximize the effectiveness of the education of contemporary college students, this article seeks to cultivate contemporary national spirit of college students countermeasures which are from the principles, contents, carriers to mechanisms, and then we can realize the value of contemporary college students’ national spirit cultivation and clear the train of thought and direction.
