Internet has reached every corner of social life with the development of the informationera, and there has been increasing influence of the Internet on people, especially on collegestudents in their thinking patterns, behavior patterns, mental and physical health and valueorientation. Just like the two sides of a coin, the influence of the Internet on college studentshas become more and more complicated. On the one hand, it offers wider visions of the worldto college students and brings about tremendous convenience to them in both life and study;on the other hand, it is also transforming their ways in study, thinking and life as well as theirpolitical attitude, virtues and value orientation. Meanwhile, the wide exposure of informationvia the Internet to college students has constituted opportunities as well as challenges forpolitical and ideological education in colleges. Accordingly, colleges should attach greatimportance to the Internet-based political and ideological education in the overall educationstrategy and play a key and proactive role in it. Furthermore, the construction of Marxismideological education base should be reinforced so as to provide continual support for therealization of greater impact and effectiveness of Internet-based political and ideologicaleducation on college students and finally help develop college students into qualifiedgeneration for the construction of socialism course with Chinese characteristics.Under the framework of “Social being determines social consciousness and the latterreacts upon the former”, a basic principle in historical materialism, this thesis makes anobjective and overall analysis of the opportunities and challenges brought about by theInternet to political and ideological education in colleges via the approaches of dialecticalmaterialism, delves into the new positioning of Internet-based political and ideologicaleducation in the Internet era, and finally puts forward new strategies as well as thecorresponding guidelines for the implementation of Internet-based political and ideologicaleducation in colleges in the new Internet age.The thesis is composed of five parts. The first part of the thesis, which serves as an overall introduction, provides anintroduction of the social background and the significance of the research herein, discussesthe connotation and theoretical basis of the Internet-based political and ideological educationin colleges, delves into the state quo of the research at home and abroad and finally putsforward the focuses of the thesis and the framework of the analysis and research herein.The second part of the thesis makes an overall argumentation of the features, content,goals and functions of the Internet-based political and ideological education in colleges. Themain content of the Internet-based political and ideological education in colleges is defined asInternet-based ideological education, Internet-based political education, Internet-basedpsychological education, Internet-based moral education and Internet-based quality education,while the features of the Internet-based political and ideological education in colleges areconcluded as equality and interactivity in education relationship, equidistance and elusivenessin education space, speediness and durability in education time, individuality and pertinencein education pattern, variety and openness in education approaches and prominence in bothpurpose and function.The third part of the thesis provides an introduction of the development of campusnetwork and the principal features of the network, a probe into the influence of the Internet onpolitical and ideological education in colleges, an in-depth survey into the state quo ofInternet-based political and ideological education in colleges in China as well as the problemsand specific causes hereof. It is indicated in this part that the development of campus networkhas triggered greater opportunities and challenges of the Internet to political and ideologicaleducation in colleges. It is widely accepted that there has been favorable achievement inInternet-based political and ideological education in colleges, which, however, is alsoconfronted with challenges including boring content, single form, lack of authenticity andreduced authority of information, incomplete system and mechanism and inadequate capacityof the education team.The fourth part of the thesis delves into the importance of strengthening Internet-basedpolitical and ideological education in colleges and the guidelines and specific measures forthe implementation. It is strongly recommended in this part that colleges, with a reinforcedawareness of the importance of strengthening Internet-based political and ideologicaleducation, should strictly follow the guidelines herein in the implementation of a variety ofactivities including construction of the base for Internet-based political and ideologicaleducation, colorful education programs in diverse forms, reinforcing the management ofcampus network, training of a high-quality team for Internet-based political and ideological education and establishment of high-efficiency leading mechanism and working mechanism,which then will enable colleges to better cope with the challenges and create a new chapter inInternet-based political and ideological education in the new information age.The fifth part is the conclusion of the thesis.
