Drawing Lewis structure is the basic skills of learning chemistry, which not only can improve students’ perceptions of molecular structures, but also can enhance students’ understanding of reactivity of molecules. In this thesis, starting from a new strategy of Lewis structure of teaching and research, we review Lewis structure writing principle、method and its application in the respects of the teachers’ behavior and the level of students’ cognitive. The expanded octet rule is proposed to solve Lewis structure of complex inorganic compound molecules. We use questionnaire to survey learning situation of Lewis structure of college students. PEADE (predict-explain-analysis-discuss-explain) teaching strategies are adopted for teaching practice of writing Lewis structure. Reflection and prospect is proposed in relevant teaching research.This thesis reviews the outline of G. N. Lewis autobiography of his academic career, research experience and brilliant achievements, and also introduces the basic chemical concepts of Lewis structure of, such as octet rule, formal charge, and valence bond theory. Lewis structures of the common formula are classified. Finally, we discuss application of Lewis structures, such as predicting the stability of the chemical substance, explanation of the multiple bond length and covalent bond order, calculating formula covalent bond length, analyzing the acidity and molecular geometry.Through questionnaires and tests of students cognitive on Lewis structure, we find that the students cannot fully appreciate the basic concepts of Lewis structure.80%of interviewee do not understand the concept of formal charge, while78%may write Lewis structure of simple inorganic compounds correctly. However, students do not grasp the meaning of Lewis structure, As for complicated inorganic structures, such as oxygen acids and metal halides, students cannot expand the octet rule of the central atom, and even make a mistake in the choice of the central atom. To tackle such problems, PEADE teaching strategies is adopted for teaching Lewis structure. Finally, in order to establish students’ understanding of Lewis structure, we proposes that teachers should pay attention to the difference during the students’ actual learning process and teaching reflection on teaching practice is essential for a healthy teacher-student relationship.
