The history of volleyball can be traced back to more than one hundred years ago. With the developing society, the rule and the tactic of volleyball have experienced an enormous transfer. Modern volleyball is developing based on comprehensiveness, height, quickness and variation, which result in a fierce contest in the net area. In a consequence, the majority of top national teams have adopted the more advanced’5-1’formation to replace the’4-2’one, which is the reason for the origination of the supporting setter position.According to the different responsibilities and tasks of supporting setters, there are two kinds being divided into-comprehensive support and strong support. Comprehensive supporting setter is regarded as one of the main guarantees for the first passer with the characteristics:relatively shorter in the height, all-round in the skill (especially for the defense in series) and more running movements in the offence. However, comprehensive supporting setter is more adopted in Asian teams as the position is weak in fixed-point attack and has to remedy the gap by depending on the rushing. With the tall stature and powerful strength, strong supporting setter is good at fixed-point attack and block but not skilled in guaranteeing the first passer and cooperation in defense in series. As strong supporting setter focuses on the attack and does not involve in the guaranteed system for the first passer, this position is more used in Euramerican teams. It is not denied that in the modern volleyball games, the performance of comprehensive model or strong model has impacted the play of the whole team and player the vital role in the game result. This thesis uses literature method, video observation, mathematical statistics and logical analysis to do statistics and analysis on the videos of the women’s volleyball matches in2012 London Olympic Games. Furthermore, through the analysis from non-technical factors, technique application situation and the relevant effects, the thesis can find out the advantage and disadvantage of the supporting players in Chinese women’s volleyball team, which can be the reference for the future supporting setter’s improvement at a certain degree. Finds via the study are showing as the followings,(1) The overall performance of Chinese supporting setter is decreased. Comparing with the prior matches, the Chinese main supporting player runs less in the rushing as she has been heavily restricted in the attack, which indicates that the traditional predominant tactic is not as strong as before.(2) There is no obvious gap between the excellent foreign supporting setters and Chinese ones in the aspect of non-technical factors.(3) The main supporting player in Chinese team, is poor in the performance in the serve where foreign excellent players get much higher score rate. Fortunately, as a substitute of supporting setter performs well in the game.(4) Due to the differentiation in Euramerican and Chinese tactics, Chinese supporting setter takes more advantage in the serve.(5) In the part of organization, Chinese supporting setters get higher success rate than others.(6) The distinct gap in the block between Chinese and foreign excellent supporting setters leads an increasing pressure on Chinese rear defense.(7) In the part of strong attack, the rushing of Chinese supporting setter requires a high standard performance the first passer. Comparing with the world top supporting setters, the adjust ability in attack tactics is relatively weaker when the first passer underperforms.(8) Chinese supporting setters are outstanding in defense as they have few action times but higher accuracy and more favorable effect.
