At present there are some problems in the primary English teaching; for example,teachers use inappropriate methods to teach English words, students forget words quickly, etc.Teachers are exploring using simple, interesting methods to help students remember thewords. By using the iconicity teaching, students can experience the joy of learning andstimulate their interest in learning English. Language Iconicity refers to the similarphenomenon between the language of symbols and its meaning in their sound and form.Iconicity teaching method is the way that teachers should explain the relation between formand meaning in memorizing words. Scholars at home and abroad research iconicity mainlyfrom the respect of vocabulary, morphology and syntax, and their studies are mostlytheoretical. However, they make little empirical research on iconicity and English vocabularyteaching. The author believes that it is necessary to study this topic.This paper described domestic and foreign research results and the status quo oficonicity, analyze the manifestation of iconicity in voice, word form, the number and theorder. This thesis proposes the hypothesis that students’ level of memorizing words can beimproved by iconicity teaching. So an empirical research was carried out among students ofthe2013graduating class in Hongtian Central Primary School in Yong’an, and the testing,questionnaire and informal interview were put into the experiment. And after the experiment,the author use Excel software to analyze the data. And the results verify the effectiveness oficonicity teaching in primary school. The iconicity teaching can make students experiencelearning English words is no longer a boring thing, but a lot of fun, and it may also enablestudents to have a deeper understanding of the meaning of the word to reduce the burden oflearning,which is no longer mechanical memorizing.
