Vocabulary is an important component of human language and plays a critical role in the process of language learning. Large amounts of vocabulary are necessary for English learners to develop their language skills. For students in primary schools, vocabulary is very important for their further learning of English. However, for a long time, we didn't give due attention to vocabulary teaching and separated it from grammatical teaching as an accessory. This research is based on an empirical study, which chooses Grade 6 students in Zhengze primary school in Danyang city as studying objects, among which class 10 is chosen as the experimental class and class 9 as the controlled class, so as to see the impact which the lexical approach and the word-based approach may have on the outcomes of primary students'vocabulary learning. Spss17. and Excel are used to process the data collected and the texts in Unit 1 of Oxford English 6A are chosen as the experimental materials; the vocabulary test designed by Professor Ma Guanghui and the vocabulary test designed by my school are used as to test the learning results. By the two timely tests and the same two tests after a week in the experiment, we arrive at the following conclusions:1. Immediate measure on the vocabulary learned shows that the learning results of the students in the experimental class surpasses that of the students in the controlled class.2. Delayed measure on the vocabulary retained proves again that the students in the experimental class surpass the students in the controlled class. Their knowledge of vocabulary by the lexical approach is forgotten more slowly than the vocabulary by the word-based approach. Based on the above findings this thesis gives some suggestions on the lexical approach in English vocabulary teaching in primary schools.
