A Study On Relationships Among Teachers’ Physical Health Values, Alcohol Attitude, Drinking Cultural Belief, And Drinking Behaviors

Health is always an enduring topic from ancient to modern times; however,Chinese people’s health has been deeply threatened by alcohol. In recent years, someresearches have pointed out that teachers are also on the affected list. And this thesisdefines drinking behavior as “individuals take actions of alcohol intake proactively orpassively”; we suggest “drinkers” means: someone should drink wine at least once inthe past year. Through extensive literature analysis, we summarized3influential factorsof drinking behaviors. They are physical health values, alcohol attitude, and drinkingcultural belief; and in this study, we have defined their concepts respectively.This study includes two parts, and the first part aims to develop relatedquestionnaires. On the basis of literature analysis and survey results based uponopen-ended questionnaires, we developed scales of physical health values, alcoholattitude, and drinking cultural belief. And then we did exploratory factor analysis withthe data of171teachers from Chongqing and Chengdu using the first version of thequestionnaire. After modifying, formal questionnaire were formed. Then, we conducteda formal investigation to334teachers from Chongqing, Sichuan, Yunnan, Jiangsu,Shanxi, and Gansu; and then conducted confirmatory factor analysis for the datacollected. The results show that the questionnaires completed in this research haveacceptable reliability and validity.The second part of this research aims to explore the relationships among physicalhealth values, alcohol attitude, drinking cultural belief, and drinking behaviors. Firstly,we analyzed the characteristics of the4main variables. Secondly, we analyzedcorrelation among the4variables. Thirdly, we examined the regression effects ofphysical health values, alcohol attitude, and drinking cultural belief on drinkingbehaviors; also, we tested the mediating effect of drinking attitudes. Finally, we built the structural equation model of the4variables on the basis of foregoing analysis. Theresult shows that:(1) generally, teachers’ physical heath values tends to be positive;alcohol attitude tends to be conservative; and teachers take low acceptance to currentlypopular drinking cultural beliefs; and their drinking behaviors are so common that about70.4%of teachers are drinkers. Yet, the scores of the4variables on each dimension arenot uniform, and significant differences in the demographics also exist.(2) Thecorrelation among teachers’ physical health values, alcohol attitude, drinking culturalbelief, and drinking behavior manifests as follows: alcohol attitude has significantlypositive correlation with drinking behavior; drinking cultural belief has significantlypositive correlation with drinking behavior; alcohol attitude has significantly positivecorrelation with drinking cultural belief; and the correlation between teachers’ physicalhealth values and drinking behavior, as well as correlations among the remainingvariables, is weakly negative and not significant.(3) Teachers’ alcohol attitude, anddrinking cultural belief respectively have significant regression effects on drinkingbehavior, but physical health values don’t. Only “physical heath attitude”—one factorof physical health values, has significant regression effect on drinking behavior.(4)Alcohol attitude is partial mediating variable both in drinking cultural beliefs affectingdrinking behavior and in “physical health attitude” affecting drinking behavior.(5) Thestructural equation model, built on the basis of correlation analysis, regression analysis,and intermediary inspection, is of a higher degree of fit.
