Phonetic-symbol teaching in primary schools’ English-teaching classes refers to the teachers’ act which is made to let the students know clearly about the speech sound of a letter or letter group in a certain word or sentence.With the development of English-teaching in our country, a lot of problems appear. Whether to teach phonetic symbols in Primary schools is one of them. Though a lot of English teachers talk about it for many times, no agreement has been reached.This research adopted literature study, questionnaire and interview methods to acquire the current situation of phonetic-symbol teaching in primary schools’English classes. From the research, it is clearly to find out that whether to teach phonetic symbols in primary schools is no longer a question in Tianjin. Instead, the one should be solved is how to teach it. The problems of the current situation in phonetic-symbol teaching are as follows:the one students imitate while learning English pronunciation can seriously affect students’pronunciation; teachers’ attitude toward phonetic symbols in class directly determine students’; most of the students have realized the importance of phonetic symbols and are willing to learn it well; students can’t use the learning tools because of a lack of phonetic-symbol knowledge; phonetic symbols have become the most important problem in primary school English learning.According to this situation, following suggestions are given:research staff should put forward some requirements on phonetic-symbol teaching; primary schools should strengthen the research and development of school-based curriculum relates to phonetic-symbol teaching; teachers should have a clear understanding about students’ demand, according to which to manage the teaching materials and help the students learn phonetic symbols effectively with interests;mean while, students should clear about the aim of learning phonetic symbols, pay more attention to the understanding and application, try to discover the laws independently in order to learn it well and finally realize the aim of improving the learning ability of English.
