Phonetic teaching holds the balance in English teaching and a good phonetic basis(spelling and reading ability) can greatly speed the development of learners*English abilities.Most junior one fresh can neither write nor read English letters, even they don’t know Englishsounds at all. Though they learned English in pirmary schools,most of them can only readEnglish words by imitation. This terirbly blocks their learning ability. Meanwhile the startingpoint of the textbook is simple daily expressions and topics. Phonemes, English sounds, wordstress, sentence stress and intonation are not involved. Considered our practical situations, inorder to lay a solid foundation in junior school period and prepare for the future learning, thisthesis holds that the English learning for grade five students in pirmary school should bestrengthened first. The expeirmental research on English spelling and pronunciation teachingfor pirmary school students is done.Youth Road Pirmary School was chosen to be the research site. The subjects are103grade five students from Class1and2in the Youth Road Pirmary School. Then after3months’ phonetic symbols and spelling teaching, the study compared this group with controlgroup of105grade five students from Class3and4who learned English by the traditionalEnglish teaching method.By using quantitative and qualitative research methods, the study got the followingresults: As far as the students are concerned,1) their spelling and reading abilities have beenmuch improved;2) their English comprehensive abilities have been improved;3) their interesthas been aroused and they gain confidence in learning English.4) the students of averagegrade and those below raised their English to a new level, but it does little help to the first-ratestudents in their English study. Meanwhile we found that teachers’ teaching views have beengreatly changed, they start to involve in teaching reform and pay much attention to teaching strategy.The results of this teaching experiment have the certain guiding significance in how touse the introducing teaching materials in primary schools by teachers. This study spent morethan three months in finishing this experiment. Finally the study saw that the gratifyingchanges had taken place in terms of learning. Because of the complexity of factors whichinfluence the teaching and the students’ individual differences, there are still many problemsto be resolved in the future. How to improve the students’ first-rate? How to improve thestudents’ all-round listening abilities? In addition, the constructed teaching mode is still notperfect enough. This teaching mode need further study to be improved if we want togeneralize and use it. How to guide learners to learn independently and stimulate theirmotivation for learning as well as improving their comprehensive language skills has alsobecome the main focus in teaching.
