Research On Social Identity And Faces In Urbanizing

As everyone knows，Drinking tea and Playing Majiang is Chengdu people’scharacteristics. The Chengdu people spend all their leisure times on playing Majiangand enjoying teas.Nowadays Chengdu people exchange their formation and faces in teahouse andMajiang-house It’s the main measure for Chengdu people to reduce the distancebetween man and man. They can relax themselves and gain others through playing,.To know how P country people behave to win their face when they play Majiang,we design this study which have two phrases. The site of this study is majiang-houseand teahouse in different level in country P as study sites. At first we use the methodof participant observation and half structured interview to observing people’sinteraction by faces. We try to understand how people in P country earn their honor byplay majiang and how they interpret their feeling. The study also try to interpret theirlocal rules about playing majiang and how the rules forms. Second we usequestionnaire to understand why people choose to behave like this to win their facesand if it is influenced by some kind of social factors or psychological factors.Firstly, by organizing domestic and foreign literatures, the cultural root of theface-saving is described. Then the connotation of the face-saving is put forward. Weunderstand how the related studies by forward people use methods observe people’sbehaves successfully.Secondly, in view of observation and interview, the first-hand materials abouthow people use local rules playing majiang are obtained. By describing the process ofplaying and analyzing the people’s dress, words, behaviors and thought. We canunderstand the local culture. We can understand why people need to win their faces byplaying Majiang which may be out of their hand. We know people in P country’s coreabout their faces: be gentleman to win their faces; win their faces but don’t needothers lose; use good word to interact with each other but don’t need it is totally true.At last, we use questionnaire to study why people behave like this and try to pryPsychological mechanism and The historical causes which Influent them. Accordingquestionnaire we find that urbanization which happened in2001-2003and the failure of social identification is important to local people, It put great influence on people’sbehavers about wining their faces when they playing Majiang.
