| New English Curriculum for Chinese Primary School and Junior\Senior Middle School says,"The curriculum promotes quality education (as opposed to exam-oriented education) and the all-round development of the students". We can learn from the new English curriculum that teachers should know that students are on different levels of their English study and teachers should provide the students equal chances of developing themselves in learning English, including those lower level students. With the development of English teaching in China, scholars and experts have focused more on those lower level students in English learning. In primary schools, teachers play an essential role in helping those lower level students. This study used document analysis, interview method and questionnaire survey to analyze the demands of English teachers’quality in the perspective of lower level students. The results of contrasts between the excellent English learners and the lower level students in each aspect are as follows:First, there are significant differences in the confidence, interest of learning English, setting goals, learning strategies, the strong will of study, the relationship between teachers and students, teachers’evaluation methods, relationship with other students’ and family factors between excellent English learners and lower level learners. Second, there are significant differences in the relationship between teachers and students, teachers’ evaluation methods comparing public primary schools with the private international school. The English teachers in the private international school pay more attention on lower English learners, encourage them more, help them very often and communicate with them more after class compared with the English teachers in the public primary schools. At the same time, English teachers in the private international school focus more on lower lever English learners’ daily progress and praise them when the students make progress.Third, among all the factors which affect students’English learning, students’ interest, learning strategies, the strong will of study, whether the students like English teachers or not, teachers’ attention, teachers’ patience and after-class help affect students’ English learning the most. In primary school, among all the factors, English teachers play an essential role in students’ learning.Based on the results above, English teachers should try all their best to achieve those below:First, treat all the students equally and establish a harmonious relationship with the lower level English learners. Second, cultivate their interest in studying English and help them grow in self-confidence. Third, help those lower level English learners more after class and guide them adopt the right English learning strategies. Fourth, help the lower level English learners set up reasonable goals and grow in self-perseverance. Fifth, adopt formative assessment and focus more on lower level learners’progress. Sixth, develop caring atmosphere and encourage the other students to help those lower lever English learners. Seventh, communicate more with lower level learners’parents and guide them how to encourage their children after school. |
