Reading is not only an important skill in the process of language learning but the major part of language teaching as well.The cultivation of English reading ability needs the teachers to cultivate at the initial stages of students’ English study.However,English reading teaching in the lower grades of primary school exists great difficulties.With the introduction of English picture books in recent years,more and more educators realize that it can cultivate children’s English reading interest and ability,and its value in English reading teaching practice.More and more English reading practice about picture books reading have been carried out.However,reading teaching just emerging,how to convert these books into the available teaching and curriculum resources,combining with the characteristics of children’s body and mind to carry out the effective reading teaching is a problem worthy of study.This research is to "The Practice of Using English Picture Books in EFL Reading Class at the Lower Primary Level" as the content,by the way of questionnaires,classroom observations,examinations and personal interviews to explore if the primary school lower grade English picture books reading teaching has an effective to promote students’ English abilities and their English reading interests.In order to check out the effectiveness of English Picture Books in EFL Reading Class,the author took two classes of the Grade 2students from Wujiang District H Primary School as the research objects.The research lasts for one term.The research has yielded the following findings:(1)compared with the control group,the reading of English picture books have no significant effects to English abilities of the students in lower grades;(2)the teaching of English picture books can promote the English interests to the students in the experimental class.This study has some implications for the primary school lower grade English teaching:(1)the teachers should guide the lower grade students to do the English reading as early as possible;(2)teachers need to pay the same attention to the pictures and the texts when doing the English Picture Books reading teaching in primary school lower grade.
