Like the teaching of English at all stages of the domestic schools, English teaching in the process of new curriculum reform in senior high school is still an examination-oriented and knowledge-based teaching. Language skills training has been strengthened but with little success. The overall level of students’proficiency is still very low. In recent decades, the application of direct method, communicative method and the task-based approach evolved by the former have made a certain contribution to the proficiency of senior high school students. However, communicative method has been somehow "acclimatized ", ignoring the domestic foreign language environment, the existence of mother tongue and its role in the process of foreign language learning. In this context, the translation method began to return. Realizing that translation should be regarded as an act of communication, people are now looking to one of the translation forms:interpretation.Being strongly extemporaneous and intercultural communicative, interpretation is a comprehensive activity which combines a set of visual, listening, speaking, writing, reading and thinking skills. Therefore, the process of interpreting training is also the one of language proficiency developing. Currently, the role of interpreting training in foreign language teaching is being concerned. Although some college teachers have made valuable exploration, it remains a blank field in senior high school.Based on the background mentioned above, this study proposes an idea that interpreting training can be applied to English teaching in senior high school. After a literature review on interpreting training applied to foreign language teaching at home and abroad, this study will theoretically explore the purpose and significance, feasibility and specific designing of interpreting training applied to English teaching in senior high school with the goal of building up a suitable and practical innovative teaching mode to improve students’ comprehensive ability. In addition to the conclusion, this thesis includes four chapters:Chapter one is an introduction, outlining the domestic situation and curriculum reform-related background of English teaching, proposing the purpose and significance of this study. Chapter Two is a literature review, reviewing the related research and some empirical cases of interpreting training applied to foreign language teaching in non-professional college students at home and abroad. Chapter Three discusses the application and designing of interpreting training applied to English teaching in senior high school; Chapter Four discusses the promotion prospects and problems of interpreting training in senior high school.
