Middle school physical education (MSPE hereafter) in China currently has a trend ofdiversity in its development, in which the ongoing reform is still on the rise and heated. MSPE isinfluenced and restrained by the political, economic, cultural and humane factors on the one hand,and on the other hand its value orientation (VO hereafter) also indicates the development trend. Aclear understanding of the historical development of VO in MSPE and a study of its futuredevelopment will help us to probe further into the concepts of MSPE, and find solutions to thecurrent problems in MSPE. Therefore, this study will be of great significance both in theory andpractice to the future development of MSPE.This thesis, by employing the research methods of documents analysis, expert interviewsand logical analysis, firstly reviews and analyzes the current problems in MSPE; secondly, itreviews the historical development of VO in MSPE; thirdly, it investigates the VO in MSPE bycontrasting the VO between China and the West; finally, it studies the future development trendof VO in MSPE and offers coping strategies for the current problems.Major findings: first, there are such problems in the current MPSE as unified concepts,contradictions between new and old ideas, or traditional and advanced ideas; second, the VO ofMSPE underwent several different periods: at the beginning of the New China, the60s, the GreatCultural Revolution,70s,80s,90s and the present time, with each different goals and concepts indifferent period of time; third, the current VO in MSPE is “health in priority, student-oriented”;forth, MSPE should meet the need of physical education (PE) curriculum; fifth, the VO in MSPEshould develop from the following points: to take MSPE as a series event in education; PE as aselective course should be personalized; PE should be a credit course; the teaching andmanagement of MSPE should tap students’ potential; and finally this thesis suggests that MSPEshould cultivate students’ life-long love of sports and life-long consciousness of learning.
