English vocabulary is the basis of English vocabulary learning. However, highschool students have difficulty in learning English vocabulary. The relationshipbetween the vocabulary which the students have mastered and language ability is adirect proportion. Cognitive grammar, which lays emphasis on vocabulary teaching, isa new linguistic theory. Therefore, there are both theoretical significance andpractical significance in using cognitive grammar to do research on teaching highschool English vocabulary.The thesis firstly gives a main description and introduction to cognitive grammar.Langacker’s opinion of basic vocabulary is beneficial to vocabulary teaching, as aresome of his theories concerning vocabulary teaching, such as the metaphoricaltheory. This research is to make a survey on the present vocabulary learningsituation,combine the requirements and characteristics of high middle schoolvocabulary and put forward some practical strategies in teaching and consolidatingvocabulary. It’s required that teachers should update their theories and ideas,strengthen the practice and applications on vocabulary teaching? For students,they’re required to acquire some general methods of consolidating vocabulary andimprove their ability of using vocabulary freely. The author of this thesis hopes tochange the present vocabulary teaching situation and improve students’ vocabularylearning abilities.It is expected that this research has a positive effect on our Englishteaching.
