Grammar is the most basic and essential element of language that could not be ignored.Without grammar, people cannot express themselves well and the further study of English will not go on smoothly. However, there still exist some problems in today's grammar teaching. For example, students are made to memorize grammatical rules by rote and learn grammar without being offered a proper context and enough examples, which makes them feel frustrated at grammar learning. In order to change the situation of today's grammar teaching and to enhance the students' interest in grammar learning,a four-month action research was conducted to apply cognitive grammar into grammar teaching during researcher's practical teaching in Hong Qiao Middle School. This study is a two-round action research with a class of 51 students in Grade7 involved.Following the procedure of action research, the study consists of four steps: identifying problems, making the action plan, implementing the action plan,as well as evaluation and reflection.Questionnaires, interviews and tests are employed in identifying problems, reflection and evaluation: Paired sample tests were used to check the students' improvement in English and the effectiveness of the proposed approach. The questionnaires and interviews are used to find out the changes of subjects' attitude towards grammar learning after the application of the proposed approach. The result of the study shows that the application of cognitive grammar can improve the performance in grammar teaching and their ability to use grammatical points. In addition, the application of cognitive grammar could intensify the students' interest in grammar learning, stimulate their learning motivation and arouses their enthusiasm to participate in classroom teaching actively.
