With the constant development of English teaching and research, especially with theissue and implementation of The English Course Standard for Full-time CompulsoryEducation(2011)(NCS later on), English teachers are raising concerns about how to teachwriting effectively. Teaching Writing has been a weak point in teaching English to juniormiddle school students. Some people believe that the emphasis on recitation and imitation ofthe traditional way of teaching writing is not good for improving English writing ability ofjunior middle school students while Cooperative Group Learning “can help to arouse theinitiative of the students in writing and be conducive to training their cooperation spirit”. Onthe contrary, Other people believe that for Chinese students in anEnglish-as-a-foreign-language environment, Recitation-Imitation can help to raise their senseof language, enhance their English thinking ability, overcome the negative transfer of Chinesethus eventually improve their writing skill on the premise of limited language input. DoesCooperative Group Learning prevail Recitation-Imitation? Currently, there is no adequateempirical evidence to support it. Based on teaching experiments and survey, this study tries toprobe which of the teaching approaches, either Recitation-Imitation or Cooperative GroupLearning, can help better improve English wiring ability of junior middle school students andhave deeper influence on their writing attitude. This study takes36students respectively in the two natural classes (Class A and Class B)of Junior2in Zhangzhou No.2Middle School as the subjects. Class A adopts the methods ofRecitation-Imitation while Class B Cooperative Group Learning. Pre-test, post-test and surveyare done to both classes to judge their writing attitude and the change of their ability and tocheck the differences in teaching effect. Then, based on the experimental data, the results areanalyzed by SPSS15.0to compare the advantages and disadvantages of the methods ofRecitation-Imitation and Cooperative Group Leaning. The results of the experiment show that both methods can help improve the wiring skillsof the students. However, the two variants of favor degree and score in writing do not showsignificant difference, which means that Cooperative Group Learning praised highly currentlydoes not have obvious advantages over traditional method of Recitation-Imitation. Eachmethod has its strong points and as long as appropriately used, both can bring favorableteaching effects. If the two methods are combined, it is believed that writing teaching will bedone more effectively than simply using one of them.
