After the new curriculum standard issued in2003, the People’s Education Press (PEP) published the new Chinese textbook for senior middle school. From an overall perspective, the Chinese textbooks for senior high schools published by People’s Education Press are outstanding and widely-used. The author examined the shortcomings of Chinese textbook by PEP from the perspective of civil society.In this thesis, the first part illustrates the origin and value orientation of civil society. From the academic perspective, civil society embodies the values of:democracy, rule of law, humanism, pluralism, participation and openness, and stands for development direction of China. Besides, by nature, Chinese curriculum has the function of spreading values and ideology. Thus, the Chinese curriculum for senior high school is supposed to manifest the value pursuit of civil society. Under current standards of Chinese curriculum, however, the curriculum idea for senior high school Chinese Curriculum is not in line with the value of civil society.The second part of this thesis mainly discusses the shortcomings of composing system of Chinese textbook by PEP. Firstly, in terms of composing idea, it only inherited the previous textbooks, but lack creativity. Secondly, in terms of composing construction, it attaches great importance to cultivating Chinese knowledge and competence, but ignores the cultivation of students’psychological development and personality. On top of that, the current Chinese textbook only focuses on teaching, ignoring students’initiative and involvement.The last part mainly analyses the reading materials of the textbook from the value of ’civil society’, and points out its lack of humanism, democracy and pluralism.
