Full-time high school English syllabus clearly defines that " focus on the cultivation of students’ reading ability and their integrated ability to use English. One’s integrated ability to use English is cultivated in practice. Therefore, language teaching should follow the principle of practice. The implementation of extra-class extension for English reading teaching plays an important role in improving the students’ English reading ability, integrated ability to use English and self-regulated learning ability. However, current English reading teaching in senior high school is generally limited in class, and the implementation of extra-class extension of English reading teaching is not enough. What’s more, there are many problems in the extra-class extension of English reading teaching. For that cause, this paper investigates the present situation of the extra-class extension of senior high school English reading teaching, explores its’ existing problems and also puts forward the corresponding suggestions.This paper contains fives parts: The first part is introduction, mainly introduces the origin of the issue, literature review, research ideas and methods. The second part defines the relevant words, including English reading teaching and the extra-class extension, and then expounds the basis of extra-class extension of senior high school English reading teaching, introducing Krashen’s theory on EFL acquisition and the theory of self-regulated learning as well as their theoretical supports to carrying extra-class extension for English reading teaching. Moreover, language has the characteristic of practice, which also demands carrying extra-class extension. Part three mainly introduces the content of carrying extra-class extension of senior high school English reading teaching from the aspect of declarative knowledge and procedural knowledge and its method from three steps that are making program, implementation and presentation and evaluation. Part four is the investigation of its current situation through questionnaires and interviews and also contains the analysis of the survey data. According to the classification of the data, it reveals the problems in extra-class extension for senior high school English reading teaching from the perspective of teaching and learning, and then analyzes its reason. At last, it puts forward some strategies to solving these problems, including the change of educational philosophy, cultivating the right concept of extra-class extension learning for students, and enriching the form of extra-class extension for English reading teaching etc.
