Social Works Intervention Of The Depressed Elderly In Pension Institutions

With the "healthy aging" idea proposed, the elderly survive states, living conditions, material and spiritual needs have been more and more attention by society. And people’s attention from the concerns of the material needs of the elderly transferred to the mental health of them. The life of elderly living the pension institutions is different from the average person’s, although elderly get the professional and timely life care, which is meet their basic physiological needs, but it is lack on some advanced needs such as psychological counseling and emotional support. There are more and more elderly become existed different degrees mental problems, in these problems which the most common is the Geriatric Depression, it is a psychological disorder endangers the health of elderly. The high incidence and great harm of depression become the most important reason effect the elderly life quality. Current research on depression groups are mostly youngsters, fewer older age groups, and the existing research are mostly target on "Home Stay Elderly" and "Hospitalized Elderly", used psychology and nursing knowledge to study their physical condition, influence factor and treatment method. But few researches use social work methods to study on depression elderly whom live in pension institutions.In this essay, I was internship and study in Nanjing W pension institutions, found that most of elderly livings in pension institutions have depression, the life quality of elderly are not good. Therefore, this essay choose the depression elderly whom live in W pension institutions in Nanjing as study object, by used the way such as field observation and chat with related personnel to overview of depression elderly in pension institutions, and analyze what they needs. On this basis, intervention the object by use group work method, at last, evaluation and analyze the intervention process and result. The result shows that before the social work intervention, these elderly generally have a depression emotion, their psychological needs, spiritual needs and social support needs could not be met, but, after the social work intervention, these elderly depression emotion was reduced, they are gave the group works high evaluation and satisfaction, after the group works, their needs obtained a certain satisfied. Finally, there is a recollect about value ethics, work skills, social workers and social work trends, practice shows that using social works intervention the depression elderly in pension institutions, is a new attempt.
