As the concept of learner-centered classroom English teaching has accepted by moreand more educational experts and teachers, teachers’ role as controller has moved back inEnglish teaching, while students’ central role in language learning becomes prominent, andthe cultivation of students’ autonomous learning ability draws more and more attention.“The New English Course Standard for the Basic Education Stage” issued byMinistry of Education in2003put forward “developing the student autonomous learning inEnglish learning” as the main goal of English teaching and learning. Besides, The Outlineof Mid-Long Development of Education(2010—2020) stresses that high school educationshould pay attention to the cultivation of students’ autonomous learning ability, must takethe student as the main body, with the teacher as the supervisor, give enough room forstudents’ initiative and promote each student’s active development. How to putautonomous learning model into classroom teaching is the key point of this research.The research hypotheses in this paper are: First, AL Model is more effective thantraditional method in promoting students’ English reading proficiency in high school.Second, AL Model helps to arouse students’ learning motivation, beliefs and attitudes.Third, AL Model contributes to form students’ reading strategy.This thesis first introduces what has been achieved in the field of learner autonomy athome and abroad. Then the experiment is carried out in No.2Senior High School in XX.The aim of the experiment is to testify the hypothesis so as to find out solutions toproblems in English reading teaching. The experiment is carried out in two classes, whichare randomly chosen as Control Class and Experimental Class. AL Model is adopted in theExperimental Class, and traditional teaching method is used in the Control Class. In theexperiment, SPSS, questionnaires and some test papers are used to testify the hypotheses.Through paired samples test for reading competence in pre-test and post-test of EC, sig.(2-tailed) is0.00<0.05. The results prove that the Autonomous Learning Model is aneffective way to promote the students’ learning interest, motivation and learning beliefs, atthe same time students’ reading proficiency has improved greatly. However, by conductingthe experiment, it is also known that arranging autonomous reading class is atime-consuming work. It depends on the functions of both the internal factors and externalfactors. And further research is still needed to explore the effective autonomous readingclass.
