Match throwing is commonplace in sports event. However, international surveys show that match throwing register a much higher likelihood among athletes from China along with other collectivist countries. These match throwing events have triggered outbursts of discussion on the prioritization of national glory or players’individual interest, because for the national success, athletes sacrifice one’s own integrity and interest to throw match for a higher chances of gold.Through in-depth interviews and case studies, this multimedia project examines why China possesses a higher frequency of match throwing than other countries, and it explores alternatives to manage this issue. The project suggest that as an inherent attributes of Confucian society, collectivism prioritizes collective good over individual rights, and thus lead to the match throwing events in which players sacrifice their interest for national glory. And the establishment of social contract which limits power and protects rights is the cure for match throwing scandals. This MA thesis consists of three parts. The first part is the transcript of the voice over, subtile and video footages. The second part is a feature story of scandals on Chinese sports field. The last part is a critical paper on my multimedia completion.
