Over the last2decades, the development of vocational education has always been a focus of China’s educational work. Vocational education, being an important indicator for the degree of modernization of a country, bears the responsibility of meeting the social needs for cultivation of qualified workers and specialized personnel who serve as direct creator of social wealth. While secondary vocational education is an important part of vocational education and high school education. At present, the number of secondary vocational schools in China totals to more than12000, with about21,000,000students and over880,000full-time teachers, the overall size of which takes up2/3of vocational school and half of high school education nationwide. Guangzhou, located in the centre of the Pearl River Delta, is also the economic and cultural centre for Southern China. In2012, secondary vocational schools in Guangzhou enrolled about81,400students, joining the239,400undergraduates and77,800graduates. However, Guangzhou is still suffering from the imbalanced supply and demand of manpower, while some enterprises cannot find suitable technical personnel for the vacancy; on the other hand, many college graduates have trouble getting a job. This makes the research of secondary vocational education development very necessary.This paper intends to analyze the basic situation of secondary vocational education in Guangzhou, including the scale, structure, object of teaching, the needs and obstacles in the process of development, and tries to find out countermeasures accordingly. The purpose is to solve the problem of technician shortage and promote the sound development of Guangzhou’s secondary vocational education so as to meet the urgent needs of the new economy.
