Video surveillance, for its advantages, such as accuracy, visualization, is widelyused in the field of home security, industrial control. Most of the traditional videosurveillance systems depend on the wired network, the complex structures of thesesystems, the high cost and the poor flexibility. In recent years, with the development ofembedded technology, the video compression technology and network transmissiontechnology, embedded video monitoring system is moving.Aiming at the deficiencies of the traditional video surveillance systems, combinedwith embedded technology, H.264coding standard and Wi-Fi technology, A wirelessvideo surveillance system is designed based on ARM-Linux. The ARM9microprocessoris used as the core of the system’s hardware platform and the embedded LINUX as thesoftware platform, a USB wireless Wi-Fi card is used as the video transmission module. The paper first introduces the status and future trends of video surveillance system, andthen, elaborates the value and meaning of doing this research. The next, it gives overalldesign of the system, according to the scheme, the main hardware devices are selected, the cross-development environment is established and the embedded LINUX istransplanted to development board, After that, the paper focuses on the devices driverdevelopment, the V4L2video capture, the H.264video coding and the videotransmission based on RTP/RTCP protocol. Finally, DirectShow technology is used in theremote client to implement the video decoding and display. The video acquired on the remote client is clear, smooth and low delay. the systemruns steadily, with a good performance in video compression and transmission. Systemtests show that the design is reasonable.
