To do predetermined tasks, a robot mainly uses an inner computer to process signals receivedfrom the environment. This approach is feasible for a simple robot, but with the acceleration of theintelligence of robots, it is not sufficient for sophisticated ones. As we know, an intelligent robothas much data to process, especially for image or video. Obviously, it is inadequate for a singleinner computer to process so much data using a sophisticated AI algorithm, never to say to processmany different tasks in parallel. After the analysis of the shortcoming of this design, this article introduces remote-brainedrobot, which is controlled from outer servers. The design frees robots the limitation of space, andwith the development of computer technology, there’s no need to upgrade software and hardwareof robots if computer power and AI algorithm upgrade is needed. Upgrade can be done by justupgrading them on the server side.On the server side, the article implemented a Robot Service System. It can control manyrobots parallelly. The system is based on Minix3kernel, it provides APIs to ease the developmentof robots’ algorithms. On the robot side, by transferring most of functions to the server, robots are very simple anddon’t need powerful processors any more. They can be made very small, can be very cheap, andcan be used for a long period of time.Looking into the future, with the development of wireless networks and artificial intelligence,Robot Remote-brained Service System will be very suitable for commercialized personal usage.
