VoIP also known as IP telephony,its basic idea is achieving the purpose of realizationof voice communication by using the widely distributed IP network as the transportnetwork. With the rapid development of information technology and computer technology,VoIP is changing the pattern of telecom industry because of its unique advantages. Alongwith large numbers of applications of VoIP system, traditional VoIP system also exposesmany serious defects.The inherent disadvantages of VoIP system,like Equipment toocomplex,business difficult to expand, service quality unable to safeguard and so on,become the main factors hindering the development of the VoIP system.Soft switching technology is considered as the core control technology of the nextgeneration communication network,which will also be the core technology of VoIP systemin the future.Soft switching technology uses the thought of delamination,it makes theequipment function become single and special by Separating the gateway. Different layersof softswitch use standard protocol for communication, which makes the scalabilitystrong.Gateway is the key equipment in VoIP system, which is the bridge betweenheterogeneous networks. The VoIP system based on softswitch has a variety of differenttypes of gateway, but there is some commonality between them. The purpose of this thesisis to analysis the commonness of different types of gateway and a universal gatewaycontrol system scheme is put forward. It is will be convenient to realize a specific kind ofgateway when using this universal gateway control system in practice,which can greatlyimprove the design efficiency. The main work of this thesis can be summarized asfollowing three aspects:This thesis introduces the background knowledge of VoIP from theory aspect at first,including the key technology of VoIP, VoIP gateway and softswitch technology. Gatewaytechnology of VoIP is analyzed in detail and the advantages of VoIP gateway based onsoftswitch technology are demonstrated as well.The implementation of the universal gateway control system was designed and achieved, including the realization of the hardware structure and the underlying software.The scheme of hardware implementation is introduced in detail and the specific designrequirements and design principles are listed.Systematic test has been carried on to the final product and the test results areanalyzed to prove the reliability of this design.
