Abstract/Summary:
With the in-depth development of world economic integration and financialglobalization, commercial banks, as the core of the financial system engaged ininternational business, has become an irreversible trend. Efficiency, which is vital for thepromotion of the sustainable development of commercial banks, is one of the core issuesin economics research, and it is also an index of bank competitiveness. Therefore, it has avery important practical references that how to enhance the efficiency of commercialbanks in the process of international operations. At present, commercial banks of ourcountry are in the crucial phase of international operation and they need to deal with therelationship between international operation and efficiency more. This paper takes Chinese commercial banks’ international operation and bankefficiency as the research objects, attempts to study the efficiency of the commercialbanks in China from the perspectives of international operation by using the empiricalanalysis on the basis of theoretical studies, and finally expects to put forward usefuladvices for commercial banks to achieve efficiency in international operation. In theory, firstly, starting from the research background and significance, this paper introduces theresearch status at home and abroad; Secondly, based on commercial bankinternationalization connotation and theoretical basis, the paper describes and analyzesthe status of international operations of commercial banks in China; Thirdly, the articledefines the connotation of efficiency and efficiency of commercial banks, and introducesseveral analytical methods of bank efficiency; Finally, the paper elaborates the way whichcommercial banks’ international operation can impact bank efficiency. In empirical study, this paper is mainly divided into two parts. First, it usesMalmquist index which based on data envelopment analysis to measure efficiency valueof14commercial banks in the period of2004-2011, distinguishing the selected samplesinto two types which includes banks participated in international operation and does notparticipates in or preliminary participates in international operation, and it compares thevalue of the two efficiencies. The result shows that the former’s average efficiency ishigher than the latter’s, and technical progress index contributes more to the bankefficiency. And then, the paper selects the Malmquist index as the variable of thecommercial bank efficiency, and analyzes the influence of international operation toefficiency through the establishment of the Empirical Analysis, the results show thatinternational operation has an important impact on the bank’s efficiency. Among them, the proportion of overseas assets and overseas net interest income ratio has a significantnegative correlation with bank efficiency, this shows that a simple expansion of the scaleand the over-dependence on traditional operation in the international operation have anegative impact on bank efficiency; While the proportion of overseas profits has asignificant positive correlation with the bank efficiency, this indicates that theenhancement of profitability in the international operation have a positive effect on bankefficiency. Finally, according to the related theory study and empirical analysis, the papermakes suggestions to improve the bank efficiency through international operation fromfour aspects including scale, innovation, business and risks.
