The Study On The Relationship Between China’s Economic Growth、Regional Convergence And Spatial Polarization

In this paper, according to the neo-classical growth theory、the unbalanceddevelopment theory and the new economic geography, combined with China’s reformand development of regional background, we provide two hypothesespostulate. Firstly, supposing that spatial polarization is conducive to China’s economicgrowth, at the same time is also beneficial to the inter-regional convergence. Secondly,supposing spatial polarization will be gradually increased under the condition of thetransportation costs reduction. And enhancing the efficiency of the elements oftransport is a necessity of the development of market economy. Contrary to the law ofpolarized development measures may do harm to the efficiency of economicdevelopment. In order to verify these two assumptions, we constructed TW spatialpolarization index panel data, and used the beta conditional convergence model,increased the TW control of variable, to do the empirical research andanalysis. Finally we got the results from the empirical model: China’s economicregion beta coefficient is significant; control space polarization index---the betacoefficient will rise; TW polarization index and the squared term have a significanteffect on economic growth, but the sign of coefficient values is opposite;"transportcosts" indicators have a significantly positive effects to TW space polarization.The conclusions of this study as following: there exist regional convergence inChina’s economic growth, whether absolute convergence or conditional convergence;spatial polarization strongly accelerates the speed of convergence in the region, thepolarization of the region’s economic development into a "U" shaped trend and lowlevels of space and polarization hampers economic growth. The degree of polarizationto break through the threshold is conducive to the rate of economic growth; regionalspatial polarization level, in line with the new economic geography theory and thedeclining in transportation costs, are conducive to the generation of spatialpolarization. On the basis of this study, we provide proposes following: China’sregional economic development should be applied to big cities and use thedevelopment strategy of the high degree of concentration, rather than a small townbalanced development. In the implementation process, we should establishappropriate coordination mechanism between regions. From the transformation ofgovernment functions, fiscal policy transfer, the adjustment of industrial structure,regional division of labor and integration and ext., to coordinate the economic growth, regional convergence and spatial polarization efficiently.
