Arable land use change, including changes in arable land and intensive land usechange, is one of the key research content of land use and land cover (LUCC). JiangxiProvince is one of the major grain producing ones in China, is also typical area of arableland change. Therefore, the study of the evolution and the driving mechanism of the arableland use in Jiangxi Province have important practical significance. In this study, Land usechange and its driving factors of Jiangxi province at county level were analyzed by meansof GIS, ESDA(exploratory spatial of data analysis) and spatial auto-regression model. Themain conclusions are as follows.(1) There are significantly spatial aggregation features about the distribution of arableland changes at the county level in the Jiangxi Province, but this agglomeration trend isweakening during1990-1995and1995-2005.(2) At the statistically significant level p≤0.05, the number of high-level clusteringregion about the area increase of arable land change transferred from5counties (i.e.Nanchang County) in the central region during1990-1995to10counties in the southernJiangxi Province during1995-2005. During1990-1995Jinggangshan city and Taihe countybelonged to the low level clustering regions about the area increase of arable land change, but Nanchang County, Nanchang city, Jinxian county and Fengcheng County during1995-2005.(3) The results of spatial lag model and the spatial error model show there is spatialdiffusion (spillover) effect about the rate of the arable land area change in Jiangxi Provinceduring1990-2005. There is also a strong spatial dependence of the phenomenon at thesame time. The major factor of the rate of arable land change is the topography during1990-2005. The rate of GDP growth plays significant side effects on arable land change. Inaddition, change of population size amount at county level and farmers’ per capita netincome of the change were negatively correlated with the rate of arable land change.(4) There are significant differences in the score and the spatial distribution of landuse intensity in the Jiangxi province. The land use intensity score in the Jiangxi provincecan be divided into low-scoring area in the northern region, high scoring area in the middleregion and high and low mixing zone in the southern region.(5) In1990and2005, low score of Jiangxi province about land use intensity is mainlybecause of the low score of the cropping index and irrigation coefficient. The regions withthe high score of arable land use intensity, such as Taihe county and Guixi city, croppingindex, have high score with the coefficient of irrigation, fertilizer application andagricultural machinery inputs.(6) The relative reduction of arable land use intensity during1990-2005in the counties of Jiangxi province is mainly because of the lagging behind the growth rate in theinputs of fertilizers and agricultural machinery. But there are inconsistent reasons for therelative increase of arable land use intensity during1990-2005for each county in theJiangxi province.
