Study On Factors Influencing Rural Cultivated Land Abandoning

Cultivated land provides the material foundation for human life and gurantees the overall grain production capability. In recent years, the phenomenon of cultivated land abandoning appears all over China because of various factors including low comparative benefit of grain production and rapid transfer of rural labor force, etc. For the sake of enhancing China’s overall agracultural productivity and ensure food security, our central government has proposed strict protecting system of cultivated land and made1.8billion mu cultivated land as the minimum quantity. Departments at all levels need to implicate cultivated land protection measures and enhance agricultural production.However, the phenomenon of rural cultivated land abanboning still exists widely, which seriously impedes the development of overall agricultural productivity and the realization of grain security. Thus it is of realistic significance to solve the problem of cultivated land abandoning in the era of new socialist countryside construction.Cultivated land is directly used by peasants, whose behavor of cultivated land abandoning will directly influnce the efficiency and profit of land use.In this paper, a field research is conducted in Nanxi district of Yibin. Factors influencing cultivated land abandoning is then analyzed in detail based on the research results, which are analyzed by the adoption of binary Logistic regression model. This paper proposes corresponding measures to deal with this problem.Based on the research results based on binary Logistic regression model, seven prominent factors influencing cultivated land abandoning in Nanxi district are found out, which are the total population of the peasant household, population of migrant workers, anual per capita income of the household, annual per capita expenditure of the household, propotion of agricultural income, cultivated land parcel, average annual times of cultivation, peasants’awareness of the importance of cultivated land. The following conclusions are summarized by analyzing the research results.1) the phenomenon of rural cultivated land abandoning widely exists in Nanxi district.2)family size and the population of migrant workers are important factors influencing cultivated land abandoning.3)the most vital factors are anual per capita income of the household and low propotion of agricultural income.4) inferior cultivation conditions in hilly areas and wide distribution of cultivated land are major factors.5) incomplete social security system in rural areas and peasants’strong reliance on cultivated land are important factors. In view of the factors mentioned above, the following suggestions and measures are proposed:1) to improve agricultural production and management scale and to develop characteristic agriculture.2) to enhance the construction of infrastructure for agricultural production and promote the use of modern agricultural technology.3) to improve peasants’awareness of grain security via media and publicity work.
