Guiding Mechanism And Decision Making For Rural Households’ Grain Storage

Food is very important in people’s daily lives and is the material basis for humansurvival and development. For us such a big country with1.3billion people, theassurance of food supply and food security is of paramount social and politicalsignificance. However, produced food has not been adequate and reasonable storageand use, resulting in post-harvest losses and waste not only seriously affect China’sfood security problems, but also directly related to the stability and improvement ofthe income of farmers. Therefore, the state in2007implemented a special project ofscientific grain storage to reduce grain losses due to improper storage.This paper based on the existed domestic and international studies about thehousehold’s grain storage decision, according to the theory of household decision, toexplore the impact of household food reserves decision factors from aspects of grainreserves and technical needs. After questionnaire development and survey, we issuedquestionnaire in Shandong province and received361valid questionnaires. First, wedescriptively analyze the decision of household grain storage, then we used multipleregression analysis and binary discrete choice model (Logit) to test the hypotheses,the findings indicated that farmers age, education level, migrant experience, totalfamily income, the resident population, food production, food prices, food sale times,leverage, expectations of future price and farmers grain reserves were significantlyassociated with household’s grain storage decision. The conclusion of the studyprovides basis for government departments on the process of scientific grain storageimplementation. This paper also put forward a mechanism that allows farmers tomake scientific decisions of grain storage.The main innovation is that this paper bases on a large number of farmers fieldsurvey data, and is the first paper that put scientific grain storage technology intohousehold food reserve decisions analysis, using binary discrete regressionempirically analyzes the main factors affecting the willingness of the technicalrequirements.
