The colonization of marine biofouling is a major problem, which must be solved forhuman to develop and utilize the marine resources. The International MaritimeOrganization took the adverse effects of TBT on the marine environment, an order wasissued banning the use of this type of biocide in the manufacturing of antifouling paints.As a result, it is necessary to search for non-toxic and efficient environmentally friendlyantifouling coatings. Foul-release coatings are an attempt to prevent the adhesion offouling organisms by providing a low-friction, ultra-smooth surface, on which organismshave great difficulties in settling. Recently, foul-release coatings modified bynano-materials have been of more and more interest.Firstly, it is investigated that nano-TiO2is modified by physical or chemical motheds.According to the analysis of FT-IR, TG-DTA and SEM, the modified nano-TiO2wascharacterized. After the choice of different methods and some modifiers, it was found thatthe nano-TiO2modified by chemical method exhibited better dispersion and stability inorganic solvent, especially for the one modified by KH-570, which showed much higherhydrophobicity by comparing the dispersion, stability and contact angle. The nano-TiO2was made of26%KH-570and the reaction for5hours, the modified nano-TiO2showedbetter effect. Furthermore, compared with other nanomaterials, the rutile nano-TiO2showed better modified effect.Secondly, the modified acrylic resin has been synthesized by modified rutilenano-TiO2with the property of low surface energy. Effect of nano-TiO2addition on theviscosity, adherence and morphology of modified acrylic resin was discussed. The resultindicated that the addition of nano-TiO2reduced the viscosity and adherence of acrylicresin, and micro-structure or nano-structure were formed such like the surface of lotus leaf.The low energy acrylic resin was made of the modified nano-TiO2and acrylic resin in theration of1:10, the contact angle between the resin surface and water was128°.Finally, the antifouling coatings was prepared by nano-TiO2modified acrylic resin as film-forming substance and used for exposure to marine environment. Compared withacrylic resin antifouling coating, the nano-TiO2modified acrylic resin antifouling coatingsshowed better antifouling effect.
