With the rapid development of economy in most countries, global environmental pollution is becoming more and more serious. As a typical pollution-induced water shortage country, water pollution has seriously affected people’s normal life. In recent years, The environmental protection department, has invested much to establish more than100water quality on-line monitoring systems for the important rivers in order to monitor the changes of water quality and the total amount of pollutants in real time.In this paper, the present application of the on-line monitoring systems for water quality both in domestic and aborad areas are introduced. For the city of Shanghai, water quality automatic monitoring system was adopted for the main stream of the Suzhou River. The system compositions, working principles, technical essentials and the function fulfillment were discussed. The contrast experiments methods between automatic on-line monitoring and laboratory detection were also conducted.The experiment credibility was analyzed by the method of mathematical statistics. The results indicated that the credibility of the experiment data of the automatic monitoring systems were suitable for the purpose of supervision and operation management.Based on the current situation that more attention is paid to the constructions than the management in China, the automatic water quality control system has been explored in this paper. Meanwhile, the automatic water quality control measures have also been summarized. As for the present situation, this article also analyzed the pros and cons for two current management models, The operation methods for managements were summarized for the medium and large cities. These experiences and practices are very likely propitious to raise the water quality monitoring capability and accelerate their application pace in the related areas. There is great significance in protecting our water resources efficiently and field development in water quality monitoring.
