Carbomer resin (Carbomer) is acrylic or acrylate and allyl ether chemical crosslinked polymers, including both polyacrylic acid (homopolymer) and long-chain alkyl alcohol acrylate ester polymer. Carbomer resin contains certain acid group,which requires alkaline neutralization in the application process. Carbomer is neutralized to make aid base in ionization, due to the mutual repulsive interaction of negative charge, molecular chain extension was expansive greatly, so that plays a thickening effect. The thickening mechanism includes neutralization thickening and hydrogen bonds thickening, After neutralization, the volume can be increased to about1000times of the original. Carbomer resin has the function of thickening, suspension, system stability, water control and active material release, which is widely used as rheological and modified thickener in the fields of personal care and drug.According to the degree of crosslinking and molecular weight Carbomer resin has different types of products. They have different use in the corresponding industry, base on the suspension stabilizer and rheological properties of different modified length. From the50’s of the last century to the present, the preparation technology and performance characteristic of carbomer resin has experienced a series of optimization, now they already can be very skilled in various fields. The commonly used preparation technology includes precipitation polymerization, inverse emulsion polymerization, suspension polymerization. Because of different versions, This paper selects five carbomer resin to claim the difference of the traditional carbomer resin and long-chain alkyl alcohol acrylate ester polymer in performance and application, which has a stage significance in the research course. They are the first carbomer resin Carbopol940(benzene solvent homopolymer)、the traditional carbomer resin Carbopol980(co-solvent polymer)、the transitional stage of carbomer Carbopol1342(hydrophobically modified copolymers) and the new dispersion carbomer Carbopol Ultrez20and Carbopol Ultrez21。The papers were compared for physical properties of the five dispersion liquid, respectively for the dispersion time, the viscosity under different hydrogen ion concentration, the viscosity at different concentrations after neutralization, the transparency, and the gel rheological properties including the size of the yield value、 rigidity coefficient and thixotropic index. Experiments show that:long-chain alkyl alcohol acrylate ester polymer was shortened obviously; Two types of carbomer in a wide range of pH plays thickening effect, and the pH value is between6-7thickening effect remains unchanged; The viscosity after neutralization increases with the increase of mass fraction, in which acrylic acid (ester) increase the maximum amplitude/C10-30triacontanol acrylate cross-linked polymer, the traditional Carbomer resin increase minimum; Carbomer gel after neutralization with high transparent property that can be used in higher requirements on transparency of products; By the yield value and rigidity coefficient, a long-chain alkyl alcohol acrylate ester polymer is better than the traditional carbomer at suspension ability; Through the study of thixotropic index, all carbomer have good thixotropy, which can be faster to restore the original viscosity at lower shear rate.In addition to that, this paper compared the sensitivity of four kinds of Carbopol resin. The study mainly focuses on five aspects about tolerance of shear stress, tolerance of ions, temperature, ultraviolet radiation to research. Experiments show that:The polymer having a shear thinning ability and the slower the recovery time the longer shearing, even cause permanent loss of viscosity; Tolerance of ions about carbomer is poor, but Carbopol1342is relatively high; Kaposi polymer having good temperature tolerance; carbomer polymer viscosity lose in ultraviolet radiation, this loss is irreversible.Finally, The safety of the five Carbopol polymers were evaluated and a representative selection of Carbopol980(traditional carbomer) and Carbopol Ultrez20(long-chain alkyl alcohol acrylate ester polymer) in two systems of shampoo and cream was applied. The safety test is used in animal experiments of acute eye irritation test and acute skin irritation test. Experiments show that:Carbomer polymer can be applied to various fields base on it is gentle, non-irritating, safe raw materials; In the two system of shampoo and cream, the suspension stability and rheological modification of Carbopol Ultrez20were higher than those of Carbopol980,In the case of low content showed better application performance, application performance and failed to improve, but with the rise of the added amount. Its easy to use, rapid swelling, the process is simple and excellent features to make it more and more widely in personal care products.
