The development of the synthesis and application of high oil-absorption resins has an important practical significance for environment protection. High oil-absorption resins was prepared by suspension polymerization in this paper. The factors that affected the properties of oil-absorption resins were investigated. The effect of pore structure inside resins was studied. And the regeneration of high oil-absorption resins was discussed.Firstly, oil-absorption resins were prepared by copolymerization of butyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate with PVA as dispersant and BPO as initiator. The effects of monomer ratio,cross-linking agent, initiator and dispersant agent on the oil absorption were discussed. The results showed that the interior network and hydrophobic groups played an important role on oil-absorption properties. The optimum polymerization conditions were obtained as follows:BA/MMA=2mol/1mol, 0.1wt% MBAM, 0.14wt% PVA, 0.4wt% BPOand the toluene absorption of the obtained resin was 17.3g/g.Due to general oil-absorption resins didn't display satisfactory absorption of long carbon-chain oil, inert porogenic agent and macromolecular compatibilizer were introduced into suspension polymerization system, which was expected to enlarge pore structure inside resin and enhance hydrophobic force of resin respectively. The results showed that the absorption of modified resins on long carbon-chain oil was increased greatly with ethyl acetate as porogenic agent at 55% concentration in the presence of suitable macromolecular compatibilizer, the gasoline absorption reached 12g/g. High oil-absorption resins revealed higher absorption of long carbon-chain oil after solvent-exaction, which further supported the close relation between oil absorption and pore structure inside resin. Ultimately, the oil absorption of resin reached an ideal level when using the mixture of ethyl acetate and isopentanol as porogenic agent, and the absorption of gasoline was up to 15.5g/g.The chemical crosslinking network, which restricted extendability of molecular chain when absorbing oil, was replaced partly by physical crosslinking network to form interpenetrating polymer network(IPN) which was thought possible to increase swelling capacity of resin. But the results showed that there was a large difference between experiment and theory. The techniques of preparing high oil-absorption resins with IPN structure need to be developed. The prepared oil-absorption resins had not only high absorption of pure oil but also a good absorption of oil slick.. The saturated oil absorption ratio can be obtained within two and half hours, and the oil retention ratio exceeded 95%.Finally, the way to recycle high oil-absorption resins was studied. According to the experimental results, water distillation was testified to be a simple and effective method, the oil recovery ratio reached more than 90%. In addition, the oil-absorption of regenerative resins was higher than original resins.
