Salen-type lanthanide complexes are currently of great interest not only because of their fascinating variety of structures but also their potential applications in the fields of luminescence and magnetism. In this paper, six series of twelve salen-type lanthanide complexes have been designed and synthesized by reactions of N,N′-bis(2-oxy-3-methoxybenzylidene)-1,2-phenylenediamine with various lanthanide salts. All of complexes were have been characterized by a number of analytical techniques. In addition, luminescence and magnetic properties of these polynuclear complexes were investigated and discussed. The conclusions are listed as following:The reactions of H2 L with Yb(acac)3·H2O, Yb(ClO4)3·9H2O and Yb(OAc)3·6H2O, respectively, afforded complexes [Yb2L(acac)4(H2O)]2·0.625CH2Cl2·0.125CH3OH(1), [Yb2L3(CH3OH)]·3CH3CN(2), [Yb2LL′L″(CH3OH)(H2O)2](ClO4)2·CH3OH·H2O(3), [Yb2L(OAc)4(CH3OH)2]·2CH3OH(4)å'Œ{[Yb2L(OAc)4]·3H2O}n(5). All complexes 1–5 exhibit NIR luminescence, which can be rationalized on the basis of different structural effects. The correlation between the structure and lunminscence is conducted. Furthermore, the magnetic analysis unveils that all complexes 1–4 are of field-induced SMM behavior. The reactions of H2 L with Dy(acac)3·H2O and Dy(NO3)3·6H2O afforded two complexes [Dy2L(acac)4(H2O)](6) and [Dy5L4(NO3)4(CH3O)2] NO3·CH2Cl2(7). Complexes 6 are of dinuclear structure and 7 features a pentanuclear tetra-decker structure. Magneric analysis unveils that there are two relaxation processes in 6. The reactions of H2 L with Ln(acac)3·H2O afforded complexes [Ln2L(acac)4(CH3OH)]2·CH2Cl2(Ln = Eu(8), Gd(9), Tb(10), Ho(11) and Er(12)) with dinuclear structure. The luminescence and magneric of complex 8 and 12, respectively, are investigated.
