Salen type lanthanide complexes arecurrently of great interest not only their fascinating variety of structures but also their potential applications in the fields of luminescence and magnetism. In this paper, twenty-two salen type lanthanide complexes have been designed and synthesized through N,N’-bis(2-oxy-3-methoxybenzylidene)-1,2-phenylenediamine with various lanthanide salts. NIR luminescence and magnetic properties of these complexes were investigated and discussed. The conclusions are listed as following:Two series of salen type hetero-polynuclear lanthanide complexes have been synthesized by reactions of H2 L, transition metals and lanthanide metals.[CdLn2L3(OAc)2] [Ln = Nd(1)、Sm(2)、Eu(3)、Gd(4)、Tb(5)、Dy(6)、Ho(7)、Er(8)] are of the CdLn2 hetero-trinuclear structure. [CdYbL2(OAc)](9),[CdLnL(CH3OH)2(OAc)3] [Ln = Nd(10) 、 Dy(11) 、 Yb(12)] are of the CdLn hetero-dinuclear structure. [ZnLn L(OAc)3] [Ln = Ho(13), Er(14)],[Zn2ErL2(OAc)2)](PF6)·CH3OH·CH2Cl2(15), [Zn2Er4L2(OAc)10(CH3OH)4](PF6)2·2CH3OH·2H2O(16) are of the Zn-4f heteronuclear complexes. The reactions of H2 L with Ln(OAc)3·6H2O, Ln(acac)3·H2O and Ln(ClO4)3·9H2O afforded complexes[Er2L(OAc)4(CH3OH)2]·2CH3OH(17), [Ln2L3(CH3OH)]·2CH3OH [Ln = Ho(18), Er(19)], [Er3L3(OAc)3]·3CH3OH·H2O(20), [Er2L(acac)4]·2CH2Cl2(21),[Er2LL1L2(CH3OH)(H2O)2](ClO4)2·CH3OH·H2O(22). The NIR luminescence of complexes 1 、7-10、12-22 were investigated. Furthermore, the magnetic analysis unveils that complexes 6 and 11 are of field-induced SMMs behavior.
