In this paper, PE in-situ chlorinating graft styrene and acrylonitrile(CPE-cg-AS) and CPE were prepared by in-situ chlorinating graft copolymerization.And they were used to toughen SAN as toughening agent.Although CPE-cg-AS conta ined styrene and acrylonitrile,theoretically had good compatibility with SAN, so that the toughness was improved, the result of experiment indicated that the normal blend ing was not achieve the expected goal.In this paper, the rheological property, DSC, SEM, GPC and stress-strain curve on toughening process, influencing factors, and morphology were studied in detail.Especially a reasonable explanation was given to the anomaly about the system of toughening SAN.The process of styrene, acrylonitrile and HDPE by in-situ chlorinating graft copolymerization was studied in detail,including styrene in-situ chloriding graft sys-tem,acrylonitrile in-situ chloriding graft system,styrene/acrylonitrile in-situ chloriding graft system.CPE-cg-AS was used to toughen SAN as toughening agent.By FTIR, SEM, DSC, DMA, capillary rheometer, and static mechanical properties, the tou-ghening process of different systems were analysised and researched in detailStyrene, acrylonitrile and styrene/acrylonitrile could grafted onto the CPE bac-kbone by in-situ chlorinating graft copolymerization, and had excellent overall per-formance.The CPE-cg-AS used as toughening agent was added to SAN, but the to ughening effect was not achieve the expected goal.The results showed that, there were two reasons to impede the increasing performance:One was due to the graft ing of polar monomers and the increase of molecular weight,the graft copolymer h ad higher viscosity,so it was not easy to disperse in the substrate resin or to redu ce the particle size of dispersed phase.The other one was in-situ chlorinating graft reaction was a complex reaction,because of the sequence structure about the prod ucts and the oligomers in the system, which reduced the interface bonding streng th of two phase.This result had a profound meaning in the enhancement of resear ch and corresponding performance about in-situ chlorinating graft reaction mechani sm.
