The polyolefin film becomes widely used with the development of society and the progress of science. Lacking of active reactive groups makes it limited in application and many surface physical/chemical modification methods have been used to improve the issues by researchers. The chemical modification most of grafting modification is dominant in the modification methods. Methods of implementation are mainly solvent and melting methods and is less gas-solid phase method. The paper applied a novel surface grafting modified method to the polyolefin film according to in-situ chlorinating graft copolymerization(ISCGC) mechanism. ISCGC which is in the gas-solid phase reaction formed special structure on the polyolefin film and has the typical characteristics of the polymer brush. Many monomer could be successfully grafted on polyolefin film surface according to ISCGC. The film surface is available a kind of polymer which has a narrow molecular weight distribution, higher branched grafting density and surface environment response. The present work discussed surface modification of polyethylene(PE) film with methyl methacrylate(MMA), glycidyl methacrylate(GMA) and 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate(HEA) and polypropylene film with MMA, acrylic acid (AA)and acrylamide(AM). Paper focuses on the PP film modified by MMA with ISCGC and the product will be named as CPP-cg-MMA for the sake of clarity. We discussed the preparation process about CPP-cg-MMA and the product was characterized by ’H-NMR, FTIR, AFM, SEM, GPC, DSC and contact angel means in detail. The result demonstrate the CPP-cg-MMA product exists on the film surface to depths of 60nm. The grafting process has a tendency to induce recrystallization. The reaction time is short and the quality coverage of grafting can reach 2.67g/m2 in 2 hours. The PP film surface with modification not only has the PH-stimuli response, also has solvent-stimuli response and could proved to be environment response product.
