Firefighting protective clothing as protective equipment of firefighter safety in the emergency rescue under fire environment, its thermal protective performance and comfortable performance is directly related to the safety of firefighters and work efficiency. Therefore, the comprehensive protection of the fire service has been a research focus at home and abroad.Cotton fiber belongs to flammable fiber, no flame retardancy, to get flame retardant effect need flame retardant finishing processing of cotton textiles. This paper systematically studied comfortable performance and thermal protective performance of the single and multi-layer composite cotton retardant performance fabric protection system, and the cotton fabric after flame retardant finishing compared with Nomex/FR-Viscose fabrics. Selected 12 kinds of flame retardant fabrics for tested its 13 kinds of wearing characteristics and five kinds of fire-retardant properties, including the fabric air permeability moisture permeability. Thermal insulation properties, resistance hydrostatic pressure, drape, luster and mechanical properties under low stress and so on. Summarizes the characteristics of cotton flame retardant fabric:First of all, on the fabric performance, and through the cotton flame retardant fabric and Nomex/FR-Viscose fabrics related performance testing, and comparing the test result analysis, concluded that:(a) 12 kinds of flame retardant fabric tear strength meet the standard external layer of tear strength "warp and weft tear strength of not less than 100N" requirement. Cotton flame retardant fabrics warp breaking strength higher than Nomex/FR-Viscose fabrics, but weft breaking strength slightly lower than Nomex/FR-Viscose fabrics. Wherein, cotton flame retardant fabrics warp breaking strength range between 776.2N~1516N, weft breaking strength in the range between 287.6N~657.4N, Nomex/FR-Viscose fabrics warp breaking strength range between 507.4N-960.6N, weft breaking strength range between 476.2N~822N. (b)Cotton flame retardant fabric has good stiffness and drape coefficient. The total length of the average flexural value between 6.23cm~22.45cm, drape coefficient range between 52.37%-83.97%, while the Nomex/FR-Viscose fabrics total average bending length values in the 7.26 cm~11.27 cm room, drape coefficient range between 57.56%-75.26%. (c) Cotton flame retardant fabrics luster were little difference with Nomex/FR-Viscose E fabrics. Cotton flame retardant fabric glossiness range between 11.3%-24%, the glossiness range Nomex/FR-Viscose fabrics is between 16.4%-21.4%. (d) Single Nomex/FR-Viscose fabrics have good gas permeability and moisture permeability; These gas penetration amount range between 38.12ml/cm2·s~578.25ml/cm2·s, water vapor permeability in the range between 6559 g/(m2·d)~8603g/(m2-d), while cotton flame retardant fabric gas penetration amount range between 6.69~132.73ml/cm2·s, water vapor permeability the range between 5331g/(m2·d)~-6800 g/(m2·d);and cotton flame retardant fabrics showed good moisture permeability in the complex multi-layer flame retardant protection systems. When the insulation layer is the same as the weight of Kevlar felts 200g/m2, the outer layer of the multilayer sample Nomex/FR-Viscose fabrics water vapor permeability from the value of 5866 g/(m2·d), out layer was cotton flame retardant fabric for multilayer samples water vapor permeability from the value of 5874 g/(m2·d).Secondly, on the mechanical properties of low stress, compared with Nomex/FR-Viscose fabrics, cotton flame retardant fabrics have following characteristics:(a) Cotton flame retardant fabric average tensile linearity LT were slightly larger, that means the fabrics were not easily deformation during the initial tension, wherein, the Nomex/FR-Viscose fabrics LT range between 0.6275-0.7533, and the cotton flame retardant fabrics LT range between 0.6442~0.8958. (b) Cotton flame retardant fabric shear hysteresis of 2HG and 2HG5 were higher, wherein, the Nomex/FR-Viscose fabrics 2HG range between 1.1233cN/cm ~3.8033cN/cm.2HG5 range between 2.26cN/cm-7.2867cN/cm. and the cotton flame retardant fabrics 2HG range between 2.2483cN/cm ~8.97cN/cm.2HG5 range between 8.19cN/cm ~14.7867cN/cm. (c) The bending stiffness B and bending hysteresis moment 2HB greater than NOMEX/FR-VISCOSE fabrics. Cotton flame retardant fabrics B range between 0.1306cN·cm/cm2~0.9109cN·cm/cm2.2HB range between 0.153cN·cm/cm2~0.354cN·cm/cm2, the Nomex/FR-Viscose fabrics B range between 0.048cN·cm/cm2~0.189cN·cm/cm2,2HB range be tween 0.050cN’cm/cm2~0.150cN·cm/cm2. (d) Higher compression work WC that means they had good bulkiness, cotton flame retardant fabrics WC range between 0.101cN·cm/cm2~0.202cN·cm/cm2, Nomex/FR-Viscose fabrics WC range between 0.108cN·cm/cm2~0.152cN·cm/cm2 (e) Surface roughness SMD were significantly smaller that means cotton flame retardant fabrics with delicate and smooth waxy feeling, wherein, cotton flame retardant fabrics SMD range between 1.9792μm ~4.6734μm, and Nomex/FR-Viscose fabrics SMD range between 2.0282μm ~4.8168μm.Third, in flame retardant aspects, Nomex/FR-Viscose fabrics length damage is slightly less than cotton flame retardant fabric that means Nomex/FR-Viscose fabric had excellent flame retardant. In thermal protection testing of single retardant fabric, cotton flame retardant fabric thermal protective performance had little difference with Nomex/FR-Viscose fabrics, to remove without making retardant processed cotton anti-static fabric A6, cotton flame retardant fabrics A1-A5 TPP value range between 201.47KW-s/m2-536.54KW-s/m2, Nomex/FR-Viscose fabrics TPP value range between 292.24K W·s/m2-540.36 KW·s/m2, In the multilayer sample thermal protection test, the weight of 100g/m2 Kevlar1313 needle felt as the insulating layer, only two samples meet the standard value of the TPP, wherein the outer layer is cotton flame retardant fabric of multilayer samples 2# has good thermal protective performance, its TPP is 1434.35KW-s/m2; and weight of 200 g/m2 Kevlar1313 needle felt as insulating layer of multilayer samples, five different combinations compatibility outer layer is Nomex/FR-Viscose fabrics 8# has better thermal protection, its TPP value is 1352.65 KW-s/m2.Finally, compared with Nomex/FR-Viscose fabric, advantages of the cotton flame retardant fabric that low price, but there are some deficiencies in the performance:After flame retardant finishing of cotton flame retardant fabric, fabric wearing comfort has been damaged to some extent. The cotton flame retardant fabric as the outer layer of multi-layered thermal protection system, when the flame retardant up to standard. Its performance was not as good as the outer layer of Nomex/FR-Viscose fabric multi-layered defense system. The last, use of fuzzy comprehensive evaluation analytical results obtained:12 kinds of flame retardant fabric. gram weight is 200 g/m2 cotton flame retardant fabric A2 of flame retardant thermal protective performance is good, it is twill fabric. The gram weight is 150 g/m2 Nomex/FR-Viscose plain fabric B2 and gram weight is 210g/m2 of Nomex/FR-Viscose twill fabric B4 followed by, without making retardant processed cotton anti-static fabric A6 is poorer.
