China is rich in the rare earth resouses, with a reserveing of 52 million tons.And only it has the light rare earth. Therefor, China leading the current trend of international market and the development of rare earth. However, due to the under-developed technology, disorganized management and irrational development on rare earth mine, the rare earth resources is utilized inefficiently in China.Chemical reagents produced by the extracting rare earth process with the leaching method will cause a devastating effect on the local underwater, and then threaten to local civilian’s health and destroyed the natural ecological environment. With the nation requirements of building the economic model of sustainable development and deepening reform, the processing technology on rare earth tailing needs to be improved.The XRD, SEM and TG-DTA tests were applied to explore the basic properties of rare earth tailing which is producted in South Jinagxi. Result showed that rare earth tailing contains SiO2 and Al2O3 as main raw material, with a low content of Al2O3 and high content of Iron-titanium oxides. Hence, the rare earth after a rational optimization is avilable to prepare ceramic verified tiles. Based on the preliminary experiments, this paper studied the recipes of ceramic verified tiles and optimal process parameters, added wollastonite and bauxite to optimize the basic recipe on the defection of product and then obtained the ceramic verified tiles recipe which complied with the quality standard of building ceramic.The result showed that the optimal raw material formulation is with HanShui rare earthtailing 50%wt, Guangdong black clay 20% wt, Panyu clay 5%wt, Huangjiang sand 5%wt, low-temperature sand 15%wt, wollastonite 3% wt and 6% bauxite. The optimal processing was under a ball milling time of 20min, forming present of 15MPa, and soaking time of 20min. The sample prepared in the optical conditions was tested and with a a bending strenth of 62MPa, water absorption of 0.21%, sintering shrinkage of 11.15%.In the pilot scale test, the processing parameters and recipes have been changed based on the reality of factory production and the optimal recipe achieved from lab. This test prepared the ceramic verified tiles using content of 55% rare earth tailings with water absorption of 0.02%, porosity of 0.21%, volume density of 2.3g/cm and bending strengh of 47-52MPa. All the performance indeies were beyond the dry-pressed brick standard GB/T4100-2006.This study innovativly solved the technical bottleneck on the application of rare earth tailings in building ceramics production. This technology not only achieved the resource utilization of rare earth tailings, but also resolved the trouble on the rare tailing treatment. Its appliance balanced the environmental protection and resource utilization. It sets the foundation on the large-scale production of ceramic verified tiles prepared with tailing.
