At present, the number of self-swelling packer in abroad has grown rapidly, reaching nearly 10000. At the same time, in China, per self-swelling packer is around $50,000 at import prices, which restricts its wide application. Therefore, studying the water swelling packer with proprietary intellectual property rights to meet the national and even international needs is quite urgent.This thesis has studied the properties of oil-swelling rubber(OSR) and water-swelling rubber(WSR) used in self-swelling packer. It studies the effect of the selection of rubber matrix, the curing system, the amount of sulfur, the variety of carbon black and its amount, the thickness of sample on its properties. In the aspect of WSR, the thesis introduces softener dibutyl phthalate(DBP),complexant Ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid tetrasodium(EDTA-4Na) to improve the salt tolerance of WSR. Studies have shown that:1. The properties of OSR prepared with styrene-butadiene rubber(SBR) can meet the demands. As a result, SBR is chosen as the matrix of OSR, not blending with natural rubber.2. Based on the study of the effect of four kinds of carbon black(N220,N330,N550,N774) on properties of OSR, taking physical mechanical properties and oil-swelling properties into account, carbon black N220 is selected as reinforcer and the physical mechanical property and oil-swelling property achieve the best when the amount of carbon black N220 is 25 parts.3. Compared with the ordinary curing system, effective curing system and peroxide curing system, semi-efficient curing system has suitable rubber scorch time, shorter optimum cure time, higher tensile strength and elongation at break,and better oil-swelling property. OSR prepared with SBR has good comprehensive performance when the amount of sulfur is 1.2 parts, meeting the actual requirements of seal products.4. The curing properties at 160℃ is determined and the curing conditions of three samples with thickness 2mm,13 mm,32mm are calculated to be 145 ℃ × 10 MPa × 22 min,145 ℃ × 10 MPa × 29 min,145 ℃ × 10 MPa × 48 min,respectively.The effect of sample thickness on swelling properties of OSR is studied, as a result, the maximum mass expansion rate and the oil-swelling rate decrease with the increase of sample thickness.5. When the DBP dosage is improved, the mechanical properties of WSR are decreased, but the decrease of WSR is not, and it can be improved to salt tolerance of water.6. When EDTA-4Na dosage is improved, the stronger the WSR shielding metal ion ability, the better the salt water environment concentration effect, thus improving the salt water salt resistance of WSR.7. Oil-swelling rubber is prepared and the simulated oil well experiment is conducted. As a result, the expansion rate of the self-swelling packer reaches 44.8% and the pressure-bearing capacity reaches 13 MPa after about 5 days, meaning that the packer can meet the setting demands.
