With the rise of the rosewood industry, rosewood jewelry is gradually coming into people’s sights and gaining popularity among the faddish crowd. However, rosewood jewelry has yet to become the mainstream product in the jewelry industry and be truly valued and developed by people. How to deftly combine rosewood of Chinese classic lasting appeal with jewelry design while carrying forward Chinese rosewood culture as well as meeting modern people’s diversified demand for jewelry is a project worthy of jewelry designers’research. This thesis is focused on the research of using rosewood in jewelry design on the basis of related domestic and overseas information with the application of Product Semantics Theory. Firstly, the author expounds the development of jewelry design at home and abroad and the often-used jewelry materials at present while analyzing the current situation of rosewood jewelry. Secondly, the author clarifies the features of different rosewood circulating on the market and illustrates the tactile texture and visual texture of rosewood materials. Thirdly, the author sums up four emotional semantics of common rosewood as "natural and sincere", "noble and elegant", "festival and auspicious", "individualized and fashionable" by analyzing Chinese rosewood cultural complex. By using examples, the author also summarizes the four major design styles in current rosewood jewelry:"Chinese", "natural", "romantic" and "individualized and fashionable" style. Last but not least, the author points out the beauty of rosewood by discussing the application of such aesthetics rules as proportion and scale as well as contrast and harmony in designing rosewood jewelry. The harmony between rosewood of different textures, the contrast between rosewood and metal, rosewood and jade, as well as the harmony or contrast between rosewood and other materials is thus obtained to increase the aesthetic value of rosewood jewelry and complete its creative design. In this thesis, the author, by using Product Semantics Theory, carries out the research on the application of texture semantics, emotional semantics, and aesthetic semantics in jewelry design. Related theories of modern rosewood jewelry design which are brought up in the thesis might offer some theoretical references for future researches on the creative design of rosewood jewelry.
