Curcumin is a natural broad-spectrum antibacterial substance and an excellent yellow natural dye, which has a wide application in various aspects. Curcumin/P(St-co-MAA) composite microspheres were prepared by dyeing P(St-co-MAA) microspheres synthesized by soap-free emulsion polymerization with curcumin. The structure and property of curcumin composite microspheres were characterized using transmission electron microscopy(TEM), laser particle size analyzer(DLS), zeta potential analyzer and differential scanning calorimeter(DSC). We discussed the influence of dyeing pH value, temperature, time and curcumin dosage on the amount of curcumin adsorbed on polymer microspheres. The color property of the knitted cotton fabric was investigated after the fabric was dyed with the composite microspheres.Compared to the polymer microspheres, the particle size of the colored microspheres was increased, the thickness of the shell was decreased by 44 nm, the Zeta potential changed from-42.4mV to-43.7mV, and the glass transition temperature decreased from 118.9℃ to 117.5℃; The composite microspheres had a good monodispersion, the distribution of the particle size was narrow, and the static stability of the dispersion liquid was better, curcumin exsited in the microspheres in an amorphous state. With increasing the dyeing pH value from 2 to 7, the adsorption amount of curcumin on the microspheres firstly increased and then decreased, the adsorption amount reached to the maximum, 7.02mg/g, at pH 5. The amount of curcumin adsorbed on the microspheres increased with increasing curcumin dosage, temperature and time. The color depth of the knitted cotton fabric increased gradually with increasing the amount of curcumin/P(St-co-MAA) composite microspheres. The color firstly became deep and then light with increasing the dyeing temperature, the bath ratio and the dyeing time. The dyed fabric had good color fastness to rubbing.
