With the rapid development of machinery manufacturing industry, the cutting tool requirement increases, and tool coating technology for cutting performance and machining efficiency is increasing obviously. Based on TiAIN layer’s excellent wear resistance, oxidation resistance and hardness, this paper studies the multi-component nitride TiAIN composite film, prepares film on two substrate include the hard alloy and high speed steel and analysis capabilities.Through the research on the technique of multi arc ion plating, we design basic experiment film composed of underlying layer TiN and working layer TiAIN. We introduce the design concept about the gradient technology structure in the comparative experiments:first step we change the bias voltage which bombardment cleaning substrate and coating underlying layer TiN gradiently distinguishing from the traditional process of straight dropping, second step which one is based on the first step designs a intermediate layer TiN+TiAlN to make gradient structure. Finally, the TiAIN gradient composite coating technology is prepared by multi arc ion coating include underlying layer TiN, intermediate layer TiN+TiAIN and working layer TiAIN.This paper studies the influence of two technologies including the gradient changing of substrate bias voltage and the intermediate transition layer making on hard alloy and high speed steel film thickness, hardness and film substrate combination power. Conclusions can be obtained that gradiently changing of substrate bias voltage can improve the performance of underlying layer TiN and increase its thickness, it gives a better improvement of film substrate combination power on high speed steel substrate than on hard alloy; introducing intermediate transition layer which makes gradient structure increases film thickness directly, and it also improves whole performance of film a little. And the performance of hard alloy coating is better than that of high speed steel coating at the same process parameters.
