In recent years, marine oil spill caused huge economic losses and serious environmental pollution. Methacrylate oil-absorbing resin have been widely used as oil-absorbents. The absorbing rate of previous reported methacrylate oil-absorbing resin was too slow to control the spread of oil pollution effectively. In order to improve the absorb rate, maleate was added as Internal plasticizer, butyl methacrylate and styrene were chosen as monomers, benzoyl peroxide was used as an initiator, polyvinyl alcohol as dispersant, and divinyl benzene as crosslinking agents.First, BMA/MA and BMA/MA/St were prepared by suspension polymerization. The optimum conditions were determined by single factor experiment: the stirring speed was 230 rpm, the amount of dispersant was 2% to the mass of monomers, the temperature was 80°C, the oil-water ratio was 1: 6, and reaction time was 5h. The two copolymers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, which proved that the monomers were copolymerized. The loose and porous structure was shown in Scanning electron microscopy images. The synthesis process of BMA/DLM/St resin was simple, and uniform particles were obtained.Second, the optimum formula was determined: the amount of initiator was 1.5% and the amount of crosslinking agent was 1.0%, the monomers ratio of binary copolymers was BMA: DLM=3:2, the monomers ratio of trinary copolymers was BMA: DLM: St=3:2:5. 7-10 min was needed to reach maximum oil-absorbing ratio for BMA/DLM and 5-6min for BMA/DLM/St. The highest absorbing ratio of BMA/DLM to toluene, methylene chloride, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, nitrobenzene, engine oil and megilp were 6.8g·g-1, 18.2 g·g-1, 16.3 g·g-1, 8.6 g·g-1, 12.4g·g-1, 5.7 g·g-1 and 4.6 g·g-1, that for BMA/DLM/St were 9.8g·g-1, 13.2 g·g-1, 12.3 g·g-1, 20.2 g·g-1, 10.4g·g-1, 9.7 g·g-1 and 10.06 g·g-1. Both had good effect on adsorbing halohydrocarbon, BMA/DLM/St was better than BMA/DLM. BMA/DLM/St have faster oil-absorbing rate. It could be a potential oil absorbent.
