Effective utilization of biomass can reduce the consumption of coal, which is the focal point of energy development strategy in China. Environmental benefits and social benefits can be achieved if bamboo charcoal is used as alternative fuel in blast furnace injection.Bamboo waste was prepared in a fixed bed reactor at different terminal temperature, and the blast furnace injection properties of bamboo charcoal was compared with bituminous coal and anthracite. And investigated the combustion characteristic of bamboo charcoal and the emission of NOx and SO2 of coal and bamboo charcoal blends at different ratio during combustion process.SEM and TG was applied to study bamboo charcoal properties in blast furnace injection. The results indicated that bamboo charcoals of Z2 and Z3 were suitable for blast furnace injection because the main index meet the quality requirements, but the low calorific value of bamboo charcoal Z1 suggested that bamboo charcoal pyrolysis temperature shoud not be lower than 600 ℃. And the grindability index of bamboo charcoal Z1 was low. The softening temperature of bamboo charcoal was lower than the requirement(>1200℃) of fuel injection in blast furnace, which revealed that bamboo charcoal was not suitable for utilizing in blast furnace injection alone, but the bamboo charcoal and anthracite blends at a certain proportion can reach the requirements of the blast furnace injection.Combustion experiments indicated that the burnout index of bamboo charcoals and coals were increased with the rise of combustion temperature and decrease of particle size, but bamboo charcoals burnout degree were higher than that of anthracite coal. The burnout degree reached70.65% as bamboo charcoal Z2 blended with anthracite A2 at ratio of 50%, which was higher than that of anthracite A2(55.68%). Moreover, the addition of bamboo charcoal in coal can reduce the emission concentration of SO2 in the flue gas. Combustion reaction of bamboo charcoals were in accordance with first order kinetic equation model.
