Magnesium and magnesium-based alloy material are attached more and more importance to modern industry than common metals such as Iron, Aluminum, etc, because they have lower specific density, better shock absorption, higher specific strength and modulus of elasticity. However, lower plasticity has limited them in all aspects of application. To improve the plasticity of magnesium and magnesium-based alloy, this study increased the mechanical properties and changed organizational performance of AM50 magnesium alloy with electromagnetic stirring. Observed and detected the changes of the microstructure and mechanical properties after different time solid solution treatment on ingot casting.Research results shows: Lorentz force can be produced in metal solidification process with electromagnetic stirring. It can rotate metal liquid and break primary dendrite to promote the transform from columnar crystal to equal axis crystal. The temperature has been uniform distribution with rotating and increased the speed of solidification to get the purpose of refined grain.Testing mechanical properties on the ingot casting, it can be concluded that the elongation and of ingot casting are best when the electromagnetic stirring parameter is 6Hz, 150 A. The elongation is 15.2% and the tensile strength is 215 MPa.It can be found that different solution time of AM50 magnesium alloy with different electromagnetic stirring parameters can get different results. With the increase time of solid solution treatment, the grain has been grown. The content of the second phase is increased in the matrix after solid solution treatment. Large chunks of brittle phase β-Mg17Al12 in the tissue are almost dissolved. And they change into small phase β-Mg17Al12, which is distributed in the matrix. The elongation of ingot casting is increased. When it was treated at temperature of 415℃ for 36 h, the elongation of the casting has been significantly improved, and the maximum elongation rate of 24%.
