China is rich in coalbed methane resources. The rational development is not only beneficial to increase our energy security, but also to reduce the greenhouse effect and improve the safety production in coal mine. The government gradually realized that the effective utilization of CBM has important implications for national energy, so more and more emphasis is put on the development and utilization. However, complicated occurrence conditions of CBM resources leads to technology research and development problems, which hinder the development of the whole industry. Using the patent information to study the development of CBM technology is beneficial to discover the technical characteristics, development stage and trend, which is of great significance to guide the development of CBM technology.The paper takes the patent literature of CBM as the research object. By using the research method of patent analysis and social network analysis, use SooPAT patent database, through setting up reasonable retrieval strategy and cleaning data, eventually gains 7227 patents in China about CBM and 683 patents in American about CBM. This paper use the tool of Excel to make statistical analysis on the application of the patent data, the type of application and patent quality, regional distribution, IPC classification, the applicant and the inventor. Also use UCINET to draw and analysis the patent applicant/inventor cooperation network.Finally, found that:(1)China’s CBM technology has entered a period of rapid development.The patent innovatio-n on level is higher. The regional concentration is significant.(2)Technical fields distribution is not balanced. The core technology in exploration and exploitation, the future research focus in part B and C department.(3) institutions was lack of cooperating, inventor generally cooperate; technology resources concentrated in minority and the inventor; also identify the important applicant and inventor, and team.Finally, according to the above analysis results, made the following recommendations:(1) Put the mine and the technology use of CBM on the same position.(2) Take diversified measures to encourage innovation.(3) Encourage cooperation which cross regional and sectoral.(4) Take Scientific approach to select objects which will be funded to research.(5) Pay attention to use patent information which can guide the direction of technology development.
